Re: [Harp-L] newbee question

thank you Phil,
I have seen the set of 7 (piedmont blues) and could tell they were of the low end... I understand were your coming from regarding getting the low end of a bunch of harps as opposed to spending lots of $$$$$ on hi end I don't need....
but that's not my style.
I would and can afford to buy the $30-$50 harps slowly this way I have quality and consistent sound..
I am having a lot of fun learning, my tones are coming in nice so I would rather have the quality...

Phil thank you for your concern, and your right I don't need all 12 keys, but if you can email me off list with your
suggestions on most used keys and brands...

brands are so hard, you cant try them out all you can do is trust in the reviews...

I did find that Lee Oskar had a nice sound but a bit hi, so I think my family might have gone wrong with the Melody Maker and Natural Minors.

thank you

abner

With regard to the harps, the easiest and least expensive way to go is to purchase a really cheap set of 7 or 12 harps. Check the Internet.

With the cheap harps, It's the most fun you can have for about $50 -- compared to a couple of hundred bucks on some really good harps.

Some will argue that no one should ever use a cheap harp, that beginners as well as more advanced players always do better with "quality" harps. But if you want to get the most bang for your buck, get 12 cheap harps and you don't have to worry "which key to buy next."

You can compare keys: an Eb with an Ab or a Bb? The easiest and cheapest way is with a 12-set of Johnson Blues, Hohner 7-set Piedmont Blues, 12 Jambone harps. Or other brands?

Why should you spend $30-50 on a quality harp in a key you will never use -- just to see how that key plays?

And if you don't like 'em, give 'em to the kids or throw them away.

  Hope this helps
  Phil

ok I'm looking at buy some books, "dummies" and Gindric. trying to find Steve Bakers play along.
I think what I really want are cd/s that I can jam with I have The Idiots guide to playing and "First Lessons Blues Harmonica by David Barrett"
I am also a bit confused on the harps.
    right now I have

    Marine Band C
    Hohner Special 20 C
    Lee Oskar Natural Minor Gm,Cm,Fm,Am
    Lee Oscar Melody Maker G,A,C

family members bought these for me this past xmas... I had no say...
and they had no idea. A friend that plays the guitar gave them the keys to buy...
    so
    Question:
    what key should I get:
as I said I love the blues, county and a little bit of rock and roll.
    Question:
Brand, I know this is so personal. The problem I see is Hohner has different models with different numbers IM looking at them and like a deer staring at a head light. I like both Hohner and Lee Oskar and I know that there are other brands...
I'm willing to spend $30 on each and up. don't worry about the cost I can buy some now and more later... I'm having a lot of fun hearing different songs finding the key and then jamming. my wife will tell me if I got it or if I'm off key... we were up till past midnight playing and singing.. after 28 yrs of marriage this is awesome..

Question: CD's that I can jam with such as "Steve Bakers play along " that I cant find.

man you cant believe how much fun I'm having. Thank you all for being part of it.
